Unknown attackers attacked the popular BingX platform. As a result of the exploit, more than $40 million was stolen. PeckShield specialists reported that the scammers managed to compromise the platform’s hot wallet. The attack occurred on September 20 at approximately 4:00 Moscow time. Researchers noted that a significant share of the stolen funds was transferred by hackers into several tranches.
BingX CEO Vivienne Lin confirmed the fact that the platform had been attacked. But the specialist stressed that users have nothing to worry about, as their assets are completely safe. At the same time, the service’s employees are now actively working to return funds to the affected users. The exchange’s employees responded promptly to the incident, blocking the ability to transfer and withdraw cryptocurrency. It is reported that work will be resumed within the next 24 hours.
PeckShield analysts were able to establish that the attack affected many cryptocurrencies, including Binance Coin, Decision and Polygon. The scammers began to exchange all the stolen funds for bitcoin and ether. According to current data, 5,300 Ethereum, 4,100 Binance Coin and more than 1.5 million Polygon were stolen from the platform.
Earlier, US authorities detained two residents of the District of Columbia and subsequently brought charges against them. The subjects are accused of cryptocurrency fraud on an especially large scale. The attackers compromised the account of one of Genesis’ creditors, stealing more than $230 million from him. Initially, they gained access to the user’s Google account by finding out his number.
The scammers then called the creditor, posing as exchange support specialists. GeminiThey forced the investor to reset his 2-factor authentication settings, citing the fact that his account had been hacked.
