In 2016, the cryptocurrency market was rocked by the largest hack in its history. Hackers stole 120,000 Bitcoins (BTC) from the Bitfinex exchange, worth about $72 million at the time and more than $10 billion today. A new Netflix documentary, Biggest Heist Ever, tells the story of this daring crime. Today it has become available to subscribers of the service.
The film highlights how a pair of criminals – Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan – tried to hide and launder stolen funds. Using complex schemes through thousands of transactions, the couple moved bitcoins to cover their tracks. However, law enforcement was able to solve the case years later thanks to modern blockchain analytics.
IRS-CI experts such as Ari Redbord and Chris Janczewski played a special role in the investigation. They used advanced technology to track cryptocurrency transactions, which allowed them to discover the connection between the stolen assets and the suspects. In 2022, the couple was arrested, and most of the funds were returned.
This story raises important questions about security in the cryptocurrency industry. The Bitfinex hack became a lesson for the entire market: exchanges began to pay more attention to protecting users, and regulators increased control. However, the risk of such attacks remains, and this problem is still relevant today.
The film also highlights how transparent blockchain technology is. Despite attempts to hide the stolen funds, each transaction left a trace, which ultimately helped the investigation. This demonstrates that even the anonymity of digital currencies has its limitations.
Biggest Heist Ever was not just a crime story, but also an important reminder to the industry of the need to improve security technology. The cryptocurrency market continues to grow, and only enhanced security can guarantee user trust.
