Studies have shown that 48.14% of new tokens released on the Ethereum blockchain were subjected to the so -called Rug Pull. Losses of investors amounted to more than $ 800 million in only 2024. These are schemes in which the creators of cryptocurrencies attract investors’ money and suddenly stop activities, leaving users with losses. For comparison, similar cases on other blockchains are found even more often, which indicates the scale of the problem in the industry.
Certik experts said that about 140 new tokens are being created on Ethereum daily. This indicates possible risks associated not only with fraud, but also with the quality of the tokencripts themselves. Experts note that the real number of fraudulent projects may be even higher.
Now the main problem is the absence of mechanisms that allow you to identify such projects in advance. Current methods of analysis are aimed at studying the events that have already occurred, which does not protect investors from financial losses. The ability to recognize the signs of a scam even before its launch could become an important step in improving the safety of the ecosystem.
Another important aspect is the connection between various fraudulent groups. Analysis of transactions and general addresses can help understand whether individual tokens are autonomous or became part of larger criminal schemes.
Rug Pull promotions are often carried out through Telegram or X, but there is a possibility that scammers use other platforms. This may include forums, social networks or even paid advertising sites. The disclosure of such channels could additionally reduce the number of cases of fraud.
Experts also emphasize the importance of studying fraudulent group strategies. For example, how much they earn before they “turn off” the project, and what technologies are used to conceal profit. This will help not only identify suspicious projects, but also create preventive measures.
