According to experts, 2024 became another difficult period for the cryptocurrency market. According to the PeckShield report, the total amount of losses from hackers and scammers amounted to $ 3.01 billion. This is 15% more compared to $ 2.61 billion recorded in 2023.
According to experts, most of the losses fell on hacker attacks, which damaged $ 2.15 billion. The remaining $ 834.5 million are associated with fraudulent schemes. Despite large -scale losses, $ 488.5 million of the stolen funds was still returned.
The decentralized finance sector (Defi) turned out to be the most vulnerable. The share of attacks on the platforms continued to grow: in 2024, more than 70% of all losses accounted for this sphere. Centralized exchanges (CEX), on the contrary, demonstrate an improvement in protection, occupying a lower share in general statistics.
Nevertheless, among the largest losses of the year, the hacking of DMM Bitcoin ($ 305 million) and PlayDApp ($ 290 million) stand out. The ten also included projects such as SCAM (BTC) with losses of $ 238 million and Wazirx with losses of $ 230 million. These incidents demonstrate that even large centralized platforms with a long history remain under the threat.
The most active period for hackers was April 2024, when the damage reached $ 662.2 million. This emphasizes the importance of increasing safety measures, especially during periods of increased volatility in the market. Experts note that the restoration of $ 488.5 million stolen funds has become an important achievement, but this is not enough. Given the growth of the number of attacks on Defi projects, it is necessary to introduce new security standards in order to protect users and their digital assets. According to analysts, the crypto community should be combined to develop solutions that will prevent such huge losses in the future.
