The mining industry in Russia underwent changes in February 2025

The Russian Ministry of Energy announced the creation of a single register for equipment used in mining. Registration will become mandatory for all operators. The initiative was headed by Deputy Minister of Energy, Evgeny Grabchak. Measures are aimed at identifying illegal operations, especially in regions where cryptocurrency mining is prohibited.

New rules require minor miners on income. Additionally, only approved entities will have the right to participate in the activities. Persons with financial criminal records are deprived of the opportunity to engage in extraction of digital currencies.

In the Russian Federation, it is also planned to create a national registration system of miners to strengthen control over the industry. Such a measure will allow the state to track the activities of operators and prevent illegal operations. New rules should reduce cases of violation of the law and reduce risks for energy infrastructure.

It became known that Rosseti incorporated significant losses in 2024 due to illegal mining. The organization lost more than 1.3 billion rubles, or $ 14.2 million. Illegal cryptocurrency mining causes electric networks, which leads to a drop in voltage and damage to the equipment. The city of Novosibirsk was particularly affected, where more than 32 thousand units of equipment are involved. Registration of “machines” will reduce risks for networks and reduce the possibility of abuse.
