The UK court did not allow James Howells to reclaim the landfill

A UK court has banned James Howells from reclaiming a landfill containing an estimated hard drive containing 8,000 bitcoins. Representatives of the executive body motivated their decision by high costs and significant environmental risks. By the way, Howells’ lost assets at the current exchange rate are estimated at more than $770 million.

It is worth considering that the IT developer began mining Bitcoin on a personal computer in 2009, but in 2013 the PC hard drive was thrown into a landfill. At the same time, Bitcoin itself has demonstrated impressive growth dynamics over time. Over the past decade, James Howells has repeatedly tried to obtain permission to reclaim the landfill. He also proposed to cover the costs by dedicating 25% of his assets to the city council.

However, Newport legislators have repeatedly rejected any of Howells’ initiatives to excavate the local landfill. In turn, the district judge ruled that the IT developer’s claim “has no reasonable basis and no real prospects.”

Against this background, we can conclude that the epic of James Howells, which lasted more than 10 years, was never crowned with success.

This story has many similarities with the situation that Laszlo Hines found himself in in 2012. At that moment he purchased 2 Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 of bitcoins. At that time, these assets were valued at $41, but at current market rates they exceed $900 million.

Howells and Hines’ situations not only served as cautionary tales. They also highlight how far the cryptocurrency industry has come over the past decade. Despite the negative results from users, these stories illustrate the development of the fate of Bitcoin.
