The value of virtual lands in the metaverse has dropped significantly in 2024, falling by 72% from their peak values, according to experts from CoinGecko. Prices range from 0.08 ETH to 1.88 ETH (approximately $250 – $5,960). The Sandbox project has seen the most significant drop: the average price has dropped from 2.86 ETH in 2021 to 0.13 ETH in 2024.
Among the major projects, TOPIA Worlds (formerly NFT Worlds) saw the smallest decline, losing 65% of its peak value. The average price of digital land in 2022 was 3.29 ETH, and in 2024 it fell to 1.81 ETH. At the same time, Otherdeed and Decentraland lost 85% and 89%, respectively.
Interestingly, Somnium Space peaked its average price in 2023 at 0.98 ETHdespite an average price of 0.57 ETH in 2022. This platform stands out for its innovations, including the release of a high-quality VR headset, Somnium VR1. The significant increase in NFT prices for this project coincided with high-profile announcements from the startup team, which also affected their market.
In 2022, prices for virtual lands reached their highest, in part due to interest in the metaverse and Web3. For example, NFT Worlds was valued at 13.5 ETH in March 2022. Other popular projects such as Otherdeed and Decentraland also showed high performance at the peak of the market.
The launch of Yuga Labs’ Otherside project in 2022 was a significant event. The Otherdeed virtual lands within this initiative gave the opportunity to owners of BAYC and MAYC collections to get plots for free. The average price immediately after the launch was 3 ETH.
Thus, despite the significant decline in land prices in the metaverse, some projects have shown relative resilience thanks to strategic innovation and community support. The volatility of the digital land market reflects broader trends in cryptocurrency and NFTs, highlighting the importance of adaptation and innovation for long-term success.
