Ethereum developer Vitalik Buterin has published a new paper exploring the challenges of global crypto space and its governance. The founder of the smart contract platform introduces the concept of “plurality” or pluralism, a philosophy that emphasizes the importance of integrating different perspectives and connections between people to create more effective governance and social systems.
This approach seeks to move beyond the original ideologies of the crypto space, promoting cooperation and public goods on a larger scale. In his essay, Vitalik Buterin expands on the concept of pluralism, drawing on the ideas of Glenn Weil, who defines it as a social philosophy that promotes the development and interaction of diverse socio-cultural groups.
Buterin goes into more depth on this topic, noting that the modern world is stuck between conflict and over-centralization. He emphasizes the need to create a new form of highly effective digital democracy that would be an alternative to existing models.
An important element of pluralism, according to Buterin, is the idea of perceiving the world through a combination of different models, rather than trying to use one to explain everything. He believes that it is necessary to take seriously the connections between people and strive to strengthen and expand them. This, in his opinion, will create the basis for solving modern social and economic problems, such as division and polarization in society.
Buterin also sees pluralism as a basis for creating new social, political, and economic mechanisms. He argues that principled mathematical methods can be used to design algorithms that take into account not only individual interests but also the connections between people. This will create new forms of markets and democracy that can overcome existing problems.
