US federal authorities have arrested and charged two District of Columbia residents. The citizens are suspected of hacking and stealing 4,100 bitcoins worth more than $230 million. The victim could have been an investor who acted as a creditor to Genesis. The defendants in the case are District of Columbia citizens Malone Lam and Dandiel Serrano. It is reported that the perpetrators managed to quickly launder the stolen funds. At the same time, the money was spent mainly on a luxurious lifestyle.
The fraudsters were detained using information released by the well-known crypto researcher ZachXBT. The specialist emphasized that three individuals participated in the hacker attack. They used elements of so-called social engineering to steal assets. Genesis filed for bankruptcy early last year. The point is that the fraudsters impersonated Google support representatives to compromise user data.
Having learned the victim’s contact number, the attackers called her and introduced themselves as specialists from the Gemini exchange. They said that the account had been hacked, and in order to ensure the security of assets, it was necessary to reset the two-factor authentication settings.
The attackers also convinced the victim to launch a malicious application. This allowed them to gain access to bitcoins victims.
In total, more than $240 million was stolen, which was laundered through 15 crypto exchanges. It also became known that due to the actions of ZeroShadow specialists, it was possible to quickly block assets worth $9 million. At the same time, $500 thousand has already been returned to the victim of the hack. The District Attorney’s Office of Columbia reported that an investigation is currently ongoing, involving specialists from the FBI and the US Internal Revenue Service.
